A chariot driver carried them out of the city. The entire population, out of grief and love for Rama, followed and slept in the forest with them. But early in the morning, before the townspeople woke up, the exiled party quietly boarded the chariot to escape the people. After all, Rama had agreed to exile, and it is no exile if the city goes along.
